Different shapes of the moon in the night sky

নিজস্ব প্রতিবেদক | |

The Moon appears in eight distinct shapes, called phases, as it orbits Earth and reflects sunlight differently each night.

The Moon does not produce its own light; what we see as moonlight is sunlight reflected off its surface. About half of the Moon is always illuminated by the Sun, but the portion visible from Earth changes depending on the Moon’s position in its orbit. This creates the phases of the Moonwhich repeat in cycle of roughly 29.5 days.

The Eight Main Phases

  1. New Moon The Moon is positioned between Earth and the Sun, so the illuminated side faces away from us, making it invisible in the night sky.

  2. Waxing Crescent A thin sliver of the Moon becomes visible, gradually increasing in size each night.

  3. First Quarter Half of the Moon’s face is illuminated, appearing as a half-circle. This marks one-quarter of the lunar cycle.

  4. Waxing Gibbous More than half of the Moon is lit, growing toward a full circle.

  5. Full Moon The entire face of the Moon is illuminated, appearing as a bright, complete circle in the sky.

  6. Waning Gibbous After the full moon, the illuminated portion begins to shrink.

  7. Last Quarter (Third Quarter) Half of the Moon is visible again, but the opposite side is illuminated compared to the first quarter.

  8. Waning Crescent Only a small sliver of light remains before the Moon returns to the new moon phase.

Why the Moon Appears to Change Shape

The Moon is always spherical, and its physical shape does not change. The changing appearance is an illusion caused by the relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see varying portions of its sunlit side. This dynamic alignment produces the familiar crescent, half, gibbous, and full shapes observed throughout the month.
These phases have been used for centuries to track time, plan agricultural activities, and mark cultural events, and they continue to be a striking feature of the night sky for observers worldwide.
